As with other shows, like The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Netflix has decided to break up the release of Lupin‘s first season into two parts. This presumably means that the production filmed 10 episodes of the show, and they have been divided into “Part 1” and “Part 2” for release. This is very good news for Lupin fans as we won’t have to wait for Netflix to write, film, and post-produce new episodes of Lupin, all in the midst of an ongoing pandemic that makes production that much harder. Instead, the next five episodes of Lupin “Part 2” have already been written and filmed. It’s unclear if they have already gone through the post-production process, but, either way, they are already well on their way to being ready for public consumption. The first two parts of Sabrina Season 1 were released six months apart, but other Netflix series released in two parts have been separated by less than three months. I imagine six months is the longest we’d have to wait for more Lupin, though nothing official has been announced. Unlike with Sabrina, Netflix presumably doesn’t have as much original content to release, given the disruption in production and, well, everything that COVID-19 has caused. In that sense, I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw more episodes of Lupin sooner rather than later, but look for a “Part 2” release anywhere from early April to July. (Update from the future: Netflix has confirmed that Part 2 will drop in 2021.) Whenever the new episodes come, the second part of the Lupin story has some work to do! Episode 5 of the already-dropped episodes ended with Assane and ex-partner Claire looking for their missing son, Raoul. On a larger structural level, we’re still waiting for Assane to accomplish his larger goal of exposing the Pellegrini family corruption and clearing his father’s name once and for all. Presumably, that will all come about in Lupin Part 2, but, with the success of the show so far, I wouldn’t be surprised to see more Lupin past the events of Episode 10. This may just be the beginning of a much longer story…
